The Secret Chord

Just when you think that things have settled down for Conor McBride… think again!

Best-selling author Kathryn Guare's next installment in The Virtuosic Spy series is coming out on audiobook soon.

I'll post more details about the project soon.

"He's left a lot of things behind him . . . but they're not far enough back. Conor McBride has lost everything, and if he can't find a way to disappear in a hurry, the next thing he loses could be his life. Running from enemies he's never met and haunted by his own destructive actions, Conor needs a refuge secure enough to hold his secrets. A farmhouse inn tucked amidst the green mountains of Vermont seems ideal, but when his past catches up with him, Conor discovers the beautiful young innkeeper has secrets of her own, and that hers are more likely to get them both killed."

In the meantime, if you haven't checked out the first book in the series: Deceptive Cadence - you can have a listen here.

What's Your Production Process?

This question is coming up more and more as of late, so I wanted to post something on my blog as a go-to explanation rather than having to keep repeating myself.

First up: my production process will not work for you perfectly.

The core reason for the above statement is that my skill-sets, life experience and abilities are vastly different to yours or anyone else's.
Your own experience and ideas will be critical in getting to a workflow and a production process that you can put your name to.

This doesn’t mean, however, that you can’t learn something from what I have to offer on here.
So bearing that in mind, as a timeline, here is what I “usually” do to take a manuscript and turn it into an audiobook.

Phase 1: Preparation

This is my first serious look at the manuscript outside of my initial browsing of it before signing a contract to narrate it.
I read it cover to cover while at the same time, taking notes on each character as they arrive chronologically.
At the same time, I start to think about what this character should sound like and I add in any appropriate notes to guide me on that.
This is done on a custom-made sheet:

The content of this may or may not work for you, but it forms part of a system I utilize as part of my self-direction process. Sometimes, if the mood takes me, I might add nothing to those boxes except the name of someone I know from experience whom the character reminds me of. It might be Jack Nicholson or it might be the postman. It doesn't matter. Character inspiration is everywhere. Take the woman you met on the subway yesterday: check out her voice, mannerisms, facial expressions and file those nuggets away for whenever you might need them.

Phase 2: Recording

With the Character Map above, I'm into the booth to read. The amount of time I spend in there is anywhere from 30 - 90 minutes depending on the length of the chapter or how my voice is holding up. I have my good and bad days. The process of recording, however, stays the same.

I press record and I read. If I make a mistake and it is a flub on a word, I will kill the line and start over. If I have my doubts about how I have read a line, I will lay down a marker, repeat the line and leave the other one in so that I can get the best of both takes later on in the editing process.
Once I've done the whole book, I move it from the booth's hard drive to the computer in my main studio and listen back. This takes me a day. During that time I run through the markers and decide on which takes I like from the previous edits I did.
Once that has all been decided and there are no glaring errors in the audio, it gets filed as "Approved" and sent to the editor.

Phase 3: Editing

The more in-demand I have been over the past few years, the less and less I have time to get involved in the editing process of my productions. I employ an editor whom I trust implicitly to know where to make adjustments and where not to. (Trust your editor! You can't keep second guessing and an over-thinking mind filled with doubt will interfere with your ability to tell a story.)
I have my own flow to stories and once there is nothing out of the ordinary, the editor is responsible for running the audio alongside the manuscript to ensure congruency, highlighting any flubs and sending me a pick-up list.
The more books I do, the less pick-ups are needed. The 10,000 hour rule appears to apply here.

Phase 4: Mastering

Again, this is outsourced to an awesome engineer in Switzerland, as I simply don't have time to master my own audio. Mastering is known as as one of the industry's "Dark Arts" and I would highly recommend that you choose a mastering engineer wisely. They will have the final say on what you sound like for your listeners. Remember that when you're deciding on how much to pay them! (Obviously, the same goes for your editor.)

Phase 5: Release

Once everything has been deemed correct and to standards, we release the audio files to the publisher for listening and final approval.
If there is something that they are not happy with, we discuss options and make any amendments if necessary. This happens very rarely as almost everything is agreed before the signing of the contract. Woe betide narrators who do not wrap up everything in the initial negotiations. You will only ever make that mistake once.

So there you have it. A quick overview of how we get a book turned into audio.
Take note however, while it might look like a walk in the park having just five steps - knowing where and how to walk, takes years.
It ain't as easy as it looks!

The Ian Fleming Files - Update

Well, what a month it has been.
I'm only now getting a chance to blog about what's been happening over the past few weeks.
The good news is that the first book in Damian Stevenson's masterful Ian Fleming Files series: 'Operation Armada' has been released to the author and should be available for sale in June.

You can listen to a sample here:

Last month, my main editing suite had a complete overhaul so I had some time off to catch up on some of my own private audiobook listening which is always nice.
I can highly recommend Simon Vance reading "Eventide" by Tracy Hickman. He really is a phenomenal narrator.

Next week, I will be getting out of this heat and heading to Amsterdam where hopefully it will rain. That would be simply marvelous!

Thank you to everyone for your fantastic reviews and emails. They are very encouraging and I am looking forward to hearing what you think of 'Operation Armada".

Onwards! - W

"Black December" Audiobook

Delighted to announce that I will be narrating the first in a series of UK crime novels by Scott Hunter, entitled "Black December".
It's the story of DCI Brendan Moran, a world-weary veteran of 1970s Ireland, who is recuperating from a near fatal car crash when a murder is reported at a monastery called Charnford Abbey.

The abbot and his monks are strangely uncooperative, but when a visitor from the Vatican arrives and an ancient relic goes missing the truth behind Charnford’s pact of silence threatens to expose not only the abbey’s haunted secrets but also the spirits of Moran’s own troubled past…

I won't give too much of the plot away at this stage. It's a brilliant story, and I'm looking forward to releasing it this summer.

The Ian Fleming Files

Where do I begin to try and put into words how fantastic an opportunity has recently been placed into my hands, having been trusted with bringing Damian Stevenson's new series "The Ian Fleming Files" to life.

As you know, Fleming was the creator of the world famous secret agent James Bond.
But what you may not have known is that Fleming himself was, just like author John Le Carré, a member of Britain's intelligence service.

Stevenson, who's screenplay for the movie "Fleming" was earlier taken on for production by Leonardo DiCaprio's "Appian Way" company has created a series of novels in the same vein as the 007 books, with Fleming as the main protagonist.

The first book, entitled "Operation Armada" will be released as an audiobook this summer.

You can listen to a sample of it here:

The Spinning Heart: A Novel

"The Spinning Heart" by Donal Ryan is now available for download at Audible.

I'm still in a bit of a daze that I was given the opportunity to narrate this Booker Prize nominated, Irish Book Award and Guardian First Book Award winner.

It's been a total joy to work with Donal and the team at Steerforth Press on this production, and I sincerely hope you all enjoy listening to it.

You can find out more information about this fantastic piece of Irish literature by clicking here.

Christmas Goodies!

Bestselling fantasy author of "The Sorcerer's Ring" collection, Morgan Rice approached me through publisher Noah Lukeman Literary earlier this year to explore the option of narrating the first book in the series, to see how it would fare as an audiobook.

Entitled "A Quest of Heroes", sales have been excellent and so they have decided to go into production on the next two books in the series: "A March of Kings" and "A Feast of Dragons".

Thor is back with even more adventure and the plot thickens in his search to find out who he is and why he has the powers that he does. I love the medieval environment with kings and knights and the pomp and circumstance that goes with it. I can see why it's a regular on the Amazon bestseller list.

I'm delighted that Morgan's listeners have enjoyed what I did with the first book and it is great to read what they had to say, and even more heartening to be asked back to narrate more of the series.

The Hawk & His Boy

In addition, the long-awaited "The Hawk & His Boy" by the stellar Christopher Bunn will be released in time for Christmas. The story of Jute and the world that the author has created around him is simply mind-blowing.

I'm beyond excited that this book is almost done. It has taken a while to get it produced but we wanted to do the incredible descriptive passages and character maps justice. You're going to love it!

The Spinning Heart

It brings me enormous pride to be able to announce that I have just started work on narrating Irish author Donal Ryan's acclaimed debut novel "The Spinning Heart".

Booker Prize Nominee 2013

Last week, the book was long-listed for the Man Booker Prize and we are all hoping that it will make the short-list on September 10th.

"In the aftermath of Ireland's financial collapse, dangerous tensions surface in an Irish town. As violence flares, the characters face a battle between public persona and inner desires. Through a chorus of unique voices, each struggling to tell their own kind of truth, a single authentic tale unfolds.

The Spinning Heart speaks for contemporary Ireland like no other novel. Wry, vulnerable, all-too human, it captures the language and spirit of rural Ireland and with uncanny perception articulates the words and thoughts of a generation. Technically daring and evocative of Patrick McCabe and J.M. Synge, this novel of small-town life is witty, dark and sweetly poignant."

Am so delighted to be a part of this. Especially due to me being from Ireland, and this being my first narration for an Irish author.
Donal Ryan is an incredible writer, and I'm very grateful to be trusted with the opportunity to bring his work to audio.

Exciting times indeed!

Coming Soon....

Ms. Juniper Jones, my personal assistant and nomination for sainthood, has informed me that any future requests for narrations are now on hold until "...your backlog is completed, Wayne".

To that end, here is the running order for release from left to right:

The Hawk And His Boy: an epic fantasy from Christopher Bunn. For me, it will in future years be recognised as a classic. Absolutely fantastic descriptions and scene-setting. Definitely the most rehearsal reads, re-takes, screams, mic-stand throwing and curled up in the corner whimpering ever done on an audiobook recording, trying to do justice to this amazing book. Oh, and there's two more in the series! "Where are my pills?!"

Ultimate Fear: a book of horror stories by Rob Rodenparker, the first of which I read as a practice run the other day, with the Pocket Ninja standing guard to chase away the ghouls that dropped in to listen! (There is no doubt in the world that this man can write horror.)

On The Trail Of The Scissorman: The third story in the Bartleby & James series of steampunk adventures by the mind-blowingly talented Michael Coorlim. I have just finished narrating "Maiden Voyage of the Rio Grande" which was an absolute joy to read.

A Quest of Heroes: Noah Lukeman Literary Agency in New York dropped me a line and asked if I was interested in narrating Morgan Rice's #1 fantasy bestseller on Amazon.com, and I am delighted to say that it is coming to your earbuds at the end of June. Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit....and now this! Awesome stuff! Am really looking forward to recording it.

So, that's where I am at the moment folks. I will keep you updated as and when I can over the next month or so.
Thank you all for your endless patience and wonderful support!

Scary Stories....

When you lie awake in the dark, do you hear noises?
Shadows...do they seem to move by themselves?
What about the corners of your bedroom? Who's standing there?
Who's watching.....waiting.....?

Rob Rodenparker is letting me loose on his compendium of the sinister and the macabre.

Ultimate Fear - coming soon.

Sleep well!

Maiden Voyage of the Rio Grande

The second audiobook in the "Bartleby & James" series by steampunk author Michael Coorlim is in the final stages of approval and, if all goes well, will be available for download in about two weeks time.

Don't have much to say about the book, other than, much the same as the first book in the series "And They Called Her Spider", it is well worth a listen.

I've even left you a little sample, to whet your appetite!

Update....and a question....

Happy New Year to everyone!

It has been a busy holiday season. The downside of aviation is that the world takes a vacation and we are at our busiest for the year! The 'nature of the beast' as somebody once said.

Four books in the process of being completed: "Spiggot" by Craig Saunders, which is proving to be a challenge due to me having to stop mid-take to wipe my eyes and settle down after another fit of giggles. (I should really do an "Out-takes" bonus file for this one.

Christopher Bunn's "The Hawk & His Boy" is coming along nicely, but needs about as much time as "The Djinn" to complete. Just one of those books that has to absolutely perfect in order to do justice to writing that, in my humble opinion, is simply legendary.

Then there are two novellas: one horror, one steampunk.
"Dark Crux" by Rob RodenParker and "Maiden Voyage of the Rio Grande" by Michael Coorlim.

So there's the update.... and now the question:
As you all know, I do this part-time, as a hobby and my day job takes priority, but with offers now coming in from audiobook producers in the US and the UK, I now have to explore the possibility of leaving the aviation world behind.

I have a fantastic job with great security and prospects, but the question is: Do I take a leap of faith, say goodbye to aviation and try my hand at full-time narration? Or do I play it safe and keep it as a pastime?

Decisions, decisions!

Merry Christmas.....and a bit of horror too!

Well, with a passion for the writings of Edgar Allan Poe, Stephen King and Clive Barker, it was inevitable that I was going to do some horror stories.

Part One of the Dark Crux series by Rob RodenParker is on my list to narrate for sometime in early 2013.
(Don't let the cover fool you: this is seriously creepy stuff!)

This blog-post is to announce the above, and also to inform you that I am now fully booked up with projects until around this coming March.

The final editing of "Spiggot" by Craig Saunders, then finishing the absolutely incredible books from Christopher Bunn's "Tormay Trilogy" and Michael Coorlim's "Maiden Voyage of the Rio Grande" will be taking up the remainder of the year and beyond.

This has been an amazing six months for me. Never in my life would I have thought that so many people would want me to narrate their work, and it is a privilege to do so.

I wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

"Broken World".... now on sale!

For those of you who like your comedy a little bit on the dark side, "Broken World", the latest audiobook from the award-winning Andrew Biss is now on sale at Audible, iTunes and Amazon.

To sum it up, it is three strange and darkly humorous dystopian tales of a world gone wrong...

"Cafe Grotesquerie"
In a broken world there exists a strange and sinister eating establishment unlike anything known or imagined - referred to in some quarters as Cafe Grotesquerie - where only the most discriminating and well-connected are privileged enough to enter its doors and devour its dark delicacies. Once inside, however, status still reigns supreme, and for one particular couple - Audrey and Aubrey - a hunger for power proves far more desirable than anything on the menu. But when confronted by a supercilious sommelier, the suspicious disappearance of their waiter, and civilization collapsing all around them, will they even be able to make it through dessert? Step inside and find out....

"Foreign Bodies"
Victoria and Max have just arrived at their hotel, La Guerre Sans Fin, ready to enjoy an exotic bargain-priced getaway in one of the less hospitable corners of the planet. Unfortunately for them, between what they perceive to be plagues of marauding insects and wildly erratic weather patterns, their holiday soon becomes a far more perilous enterprise than anticipated. When a group of local tribesmen appear on the scene, however, they at last begin to feel as though things are about to brighten up for them. And in this broken world of theirs, indeed they are....

"The Joneses"
Mr. and Mrs. Jones' zealous desire to be seen as doyens of the community lead them to undertake a misguided mission that rapidly spirals out of control. Their adoption of children from an impoverished part of the world was intended to bring them widespread admiration, but when their charges turn murderous everything starts to unravel. However, in spite of the grim realities that now confront them, they remain stalwart in their pursuit of a higher social standing. But is that really the smell of victory in the air...or did things just get a little too hot to handle?

So there you have it, folks. I am now signing off for a short break to rest my vocal cords, and to finish preparation for my next fantasy trilogy project which I hope you are going to love!
Will be in touch again over Christmas to tell you what presents I got!
"Broken World" by Andrew Biss... have a listen over at Audible.

Steampunk!...

Three weeks ago, when asked to narrate the Victorian steampunk adventure story "And They Called Her Spider" by Michael Coorlim, I had no idea what 'steampunk' was, and even less of an idea about how hooked I was going to get by it in such a short space of time.

To put it in a nutshell, steampunk is "a sub-genre of science fiction that typically features steam-powered machinery, especially in a setting inspired by industrialized Western civilization during the 19th century."

The best way I can describe it for you from a personal perspective is to go back to the time of Jules Verne and his "Twenty Thousand Leagues Under The Sea" types of machinery. Wonderful fantasy worlds, with great story-lines and awesome characters.
Coorlim adds a Sherlock Holmes element to this era, and out of that has come the "Bartleby & James Adventures" series, which is quite simply magnificent.

Now, in a fit of immense grace and kindness, he has invited me to narrate the second in the series entitled "Maiden Voyage of the Rio Grande" and I am utterly thrilled at being able to accept.

"And They Called Her Spider" is due for release in the next week or so.
In the meantime, check out this incredible author and his equally incredible imagination, harnessed forever in his books

Hike Up Devil's Mountain

After quite a wait for processing, I am happy to say that Penny Estelle's children's book, "Hike Up Devil's Mountain" is now on sale at Audible.com
It covers the story of ten year old Andy Thompson, and his adventures having accidentally turned his young friend into a toad.
Lots of twists and turns in the plot which will keep the kids happy for hours. It kept me amused for a few while reading it!
Anyways, it is out just in time for Halloween! Bwahahahah! Enjoy!
